Basic JavaChat usage:
The bottom line, marked private, contains any private message (PM) conversations you're having. Each person will be listed on a different button. Status is a special area for messages from the server itself.
The next line up, marked public, lists any channels you're in. Each channel will have its own button. Channel names always start with a hashmark (#).
The empty line above those is the input text area. Enter any commands or text to send here. Commands always start with a slash (/). Anything not a command will be sent as text to the selected channel/private message button.

Common commands:
Change your nickname: /nick
/nick NewNickname

Join a channel: /join
/join #channel

If a button is red it indicates new text in that channel/private message.
